![]() As I added the text and saved it, the open file on the iPhone was updated within 15 seconds. I also installed it on the iPhone and the saved text was synchronised in under 30 seconds. I installed iA Writer on the Mac mini first and started to write this column. I elected to use iCloud but also activated the link to DropBox on the iOS devices and saved backup copies. These can synchronise via DropBox or iCloud. The iOS app is universal (iPhone and iPad) and is priced at $4.99. At the suggestion of a local Mac user, I downloaded iA Writer (US$9.99, or 335 baht). Setting up my new Mac mini has given me a clean slate with what to install (or not). What I have installed currently still works, but I must plan for the future. Although the Mac version is still available, Hog Bay Software ended support for iOS. This was available for OS X and iOS devices and synchronised via DropBox. I can code web pages easily enough in this or if I need formatted output, I will copy to Apple's Text Edit (it saves in rtf and doc) or in Pages.Īs TextWrangler does not work with iOS devices, I ran WriteRoom for a while. When I am ready for the computer, I use TextWrangler from BareBones Software most of the time. I have notebooks going back years, including for the 2007 iPhone introduction and the MacBook Air in 2008. I suggest this to my students who take as much notice of this as when I tell them to back up their data. When I am testing software, I write directly into a large notebook and I use this for my first notes when writing. Those that have a nice sound to them are written down on paper. I start the process in my head and map out ideas and sentences. A formatted screen - toolbars, tabs, font-choice - inhibits the thinking and writing processes. ![]() When I input text by digital means, I never start with a word processor. Although the text ends up on a computer, that is not usually my starting point. Over the course of a year, I do a lot of writing, including for my website, for work and for the Bangkok Post. Whenever these erroneous stories are found to be false, however, those who made (and spread) them almost always fail to retract them. There are many such rumours and there are those who much prefer the bad news to any denial by Apple. This produced an unusual rebuff from Apple: Homekit is on track. Another rumour reported was how Homekit - Apple's unifying approach to the Internet of Things - is having problems and will be delayed until September. The top rumour was that Apple would produce a new rose gold colour for the next iPhone. With Apple's World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) only a couple of weeks away (June 8-12), the rumours have already begun. Copy Text: iA Writer has a great two-tap solution for copying all of the text you’ve written within the app, so that you can paste it into another.Draft for this week’s article - yeah I know my hand-writing is bad.the lack of settings in iA Writer are as annoying as they are awesome – if you hate fiddling, iA Writer is still the app to go to.iA Writer’s Nitti Light font is still the most legible thing since, well, ever.iA Writer still has the excellent focus mode and the accompanying typewriter scrolling going for it.Dropbox support in iA Writer isn’t quite as good as in Byword, especially since you get kicked to the main level (/Dropbox) of your directory every time you load the app up fresh.I think it makes a lot more sense to have the text stay centered on screen, instead of constantly peering down towards the bottom of the screen as I type. The only thing from the desktop Byword app that I miss so far is typewriter scrolling. ![]() Only when you tap on a note will the full version be downloaded to your device, so don’t be surprised if you load Byword up and find far fewer files in the list – it probably means you’re offline. Much like the Evernote app, Byword simply pulls down a list and quick previews of each of your notes. Dropbox sync happens very quickly, but it’s a little different than expected. Syncing options include iCloud and Dropbox, and I opted for the latter. The iPad app boasts a good full screen mode, and both the iPad and iPhone support a really great gesture to quickly move back to list view (swipe right). A flexible bar at the bottom of the screen plays the part of character and word counter and extended keyboard, which is a very interesting approach – though the buttons could probably stand to be a bit bigger. That’s certainly high praise, but well deserved.īyword for iOS features excellent Markdown support, automatically helping you along with bullet points, allowing you to export your HTML, preview your Markdown, and even copy the raw HTML to the clipboard (score!). Byword is exemplary of how to make a writing app on the iPhone and iPad. Byword is a word, a Mac app for the generation of words, and, as of yesterday, also an iOS app for the mobile generation of words.
